Good morning girls!

I thought I would share a little "crafty" project I took on last week.

I am beginning to accessorize some of the rooms in our home. We hope to make the move in the next couple of weeks and I have been busy painting, cleaning and furniture shopping!

I had seen this 'FAMILY RULES' canvas on a blog a while back. I didn't really have the space to put a larger piece in our tiny little cottage, but in the other house, I have lots of walls to fill!!

Here is the link to the 'original'......and she has better directions.......and prettier pictures.....

Basically, you want to grab a large canvas, pick out some of your favorite fabric pieces or pretty papers and decoupage the fabric/paper to your canvas......

You can {obviously} see my paper seams.....layers and layers of modge-podge helped even the seams out.....

There are a few different ways to create the rules. I printed mine and then modge-podged the heck out of them!

Matt built me a little frame, and they we go! Just the right amount of whimsy for my 'new' home office!

Good morning ladies!

I thought I would share some inspiration photos for a master bathroom I am re-decorating for a client.

The couple lives in an older home {early 1900} and we want to keep the look, simple, classic and 'air-y'.......my FAVORITE!

Who doesn't love molding and trim work? The detail and character it adds to a space is amazing.

Love those windows above the bathtub...

I have a slight obsession with wallpaper. It adds color and or/texture. It can really help define the look of a space....and it's just so pretty!

Love the yummy basket under the sink....oh and look at the tile floor.....

Subway tile is so classic.....

Aren't these spaces beautiful? I just had to share!

Good morning ladies!

Can I just tell you I.A.D.O.R.E Saturday mornings!

Around here, Saturday mornings start slow and relaxed. They usually end with a large breakfast, too much coffee, and a very full and happy heart!

Come nap time, I am ready to tackle the day! Which leads to know........I am sitting at my computer with a fresh cup of coffee and my creative juices flowing. It's time for me to wrap up some conceptual drawings for a new kitchen design.

I thought I would share a few photos.

Here is a BEFORE shot. .....

Now, the space is completely gutted. Matt has it down to studs and flooring.

After meeting with the clients and discussing wants, needs and wishes, here is a very "rough" conceptual design.

I love every aspect of design.....but I particularly love the fine tuning! Can't wait to show you the finished drawing....and of course the finished project!

Here are a few of my inspiration photos.....

The goal is to have a modern yet rustic look, a look that is cohesive with the rest of the interior and exterior.

Good morning lovelies!

Did you have a wonderful Christmas? We did. I have been soaking up every last minute of the holiday festivities. They go by so fast!

With the New Year fast approaching, conversations seem to turn to New Year's resolutions. As I have been chatting with friends about different resolutions, "health" usually is brought up. The "health" topic usually leads to Kombucha.

Kom what??

K-O-M-B-U-C-H-A.

We have been drinking it here in the Haney home for about a year. I brew a new batch once a week. It looks crazy, smells funny and it full of wonderful health benefits!

Here are a few tidbits from others who can explain it much better than I can!

Kombucha contains multiple species of yeast and bacteria along with the organic acids, active enzymes, amino acids, and polyphenols produced by these microbes. The precise quantities of a sample can only be determined by laboratory analysis.

Kombucha producers often make the claim that 'kombucha detoxifies the body and energizes the mind', although there is little published research on the health benefits of kombucha. Proponents of kombucha claim it aids cancer recovery, increases energy, sharpens eyesight, aids joint recovery, improves skin elasticity, aids digestion, and improves experience with foods that 'stick' going down such as rice or pasta.

Kombucha is typically produced by placing a culture in a sweetened tea, as sugars assist fermentation. Black tea is a popular choice but green tea or white tea may also be used. Blending of tea may produce more balanced flavors and benefits from the different types of teas. Herbal teas or those treated with oils may harm the Kombucha culture over time.

salted carmel shortbread bites

Good morning friends!

I hope you are enjoying these last days until Christmas!

I decided to spend some time in the kitchen yesterday.

Just me, the baby, and some Christmas music.

Over the past year, we have dramatically changed the way we eat. With that change, I don't do nearly the baking I use to.

I.LOVE.BAKING.

I want my sweet babe to enjoy baking as well {or at least know how to :}

She is off to a great start!

Yesterday, we made SALTED CARMEL SHORTBREAD BITES.

In all honesty, they didn't turn out as good as I had hoped. But, there were still sweet, salty, gooey, goodness.

I thought I would share the recipe with you, maybe you will have better luck!

Shortbread Layer:

10 tbsp. salted butter, melted
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
Zest of half an orange
1 egg yolk, whisked
1 2/3 cups All Purpose flour

Caramel Topping:

1/4 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar

3/4 cup light corn syrup
2 tsp. sea salt
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. orange extract

Sea salt flakes, to top

Directions

Prepare an 8×8 inch pan with parchment paper with the edges of the parchment hanging over two of the sides. This allows you to remove the bars easily once cooled.

Combine the melted butter, sugar, salt and zest with a fork in a large bowl. Add the yolk and again combine with the fork. Add the flour and stir with a heavy spoon or your hands and combine the dough until it is well combined. Place the dough in the prepared pan and press down evenly with your hands until the pan is covered. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to one hour. Remove and bake at 350 for 25-28 minutes, until very lightly browned. Allow to cool while you are preparing the caramel.

In a heavy bottomed pot, such as enameled cast iron, combine all caramel topping ingredients save for the extracts. Bring to a boil and stir until sugars are dissolved and the mixture is well combined. Using a candy thermometer, watch for the goal of about 230 degrees. Remove from heat and stir in the extracts. Allow to cool for a couple of minutes, then pour over the shortbread base. Sprinkle with sea salt, then refrigerate for several hours. Once chilled, cut into small squares, serve and enjoy!

Mine turned out really gooey. I think I let the carmel cook too long. I wrapped them up with wax paper and popped them in the refrigerator....

ironing board cover

Good afternoon sweet friends!

Today is rainy and cold outside.

A good day to sit by the fire and enjoy a cup of tea.

Even better....sit by the fire with a cup of tea and work on a little sewing project while the baby sleeps.

This morning I made a new cover for my ironing board. It was so easy-peasy! I just sewed right over my existing cover.

Can you believe I have had the same cover for 10 years? I am beginning to feel old!

Anyways, I thought I would share a few easy tips in case you get the sewing bug....

1. select a pretty fabric, one that makes you smile...

2. i used my existing pad as a template.....just trace your existing cover, leaving a 1" seam allowance.....

3. pin. sew. {make sure to not sew over the elastic cord....then you can still use the cord without having to go and add new cord!}

4. smile as you look at your pile of ironing because now you have a pretty ironing board cover to help you with your chores!

easy-peasy banner

Good Monday morning!

It's so hard to believe we are well on our way into December!

Friday morning, my little seamstress and I worked on a super easy banner. The banner could easily be a "no sew" craft as well......

What you will need:

scissors
pinking shears {not necessary, but make things much easier!}
fabric
triangle template
bias tape
sewing machine or fabric glue

It goes much faster if you have a little helper. Little toe-heads dressed in pink are my favorite!

I drew a triangle on a piece of cardboard and used it as my template.

For a super simple banner, use pinking shears to cut the fabric.

If sewing isn't your thing, you can easily glue the fabric to the bias tape. I chose to sew....

Banners just add a bit of whimsy and they can be an in-expensive touch of color!

This banner was used for our Christmas in Carlton festivities and we can easily use it year after year!

Good morning girls!

Today as I am trying to prepare for a busy weekend, I am reminded of how thankful I am for my freedom, health, work, and family. I so easily get caught in the hustle and bustle of life that I too often forget of how blessed I am.

Spiced Chai Snicker-Doodles

Yesterday was a beautiful, chilly, Autumn day. A perfect day for baking!

This was my first attempt at SPICED CHAI SNICKERDOODLES. Since snickerdoodles are pretty hard to mess up, I figured they couldn't turn out too bad!

They were just perfect!

Soft, light with a touch of spice!

Recipe:
Makes about 3 dozen
Adapted from here

1 1/2 cup sugar
1 stick of butter
1/4 cup canola oil
2 large eggs at room temp
2 3/4 cup AP flour
2 tsp cream of tartar*
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ginger
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1/8 tsp ground cloves
1/8 tsp ground cardamom

Mix these separately in a dry bowl:
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ginger
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1/8 tsp cloves
1/8 tsp cardamom
1/4 cup granulated sugar

Cream the sugar and the butter in the bowl till fluffy. Add the oil and the eggs one at a time. Slowly add in the dry ingredients (minus the separate bowl of spices+sugar) and let it form into a dough. Make balls of dough and roll each in the mixture of spices before placing it on a baking sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes and cool before removing.

1~ personal touches

2~ practical window coverings

3~ a beautiful light fixture makes a HUGE impact in a bedroom

4~ a patterned quilt with a white (folded) duvet at the foot of the bed is inviting, practical and easy to launder

5~ luxurious linens are worth the extra cost

Those are my top 5 "musts" in a bedroom....what about you??

OK, off to go bake some chai-snicker doodles.....don't those sound so yummy for a cold, foggy fall day?? If they turn out, I will be sure to share the recipe!!

favorite smoothie {at least for right now}

Good morning girls!

Do you ever find a food or drink you like and indulge yourself with said food/drink everyday until you can't stomach the thought of taking another bite/drink of said food/drink?

I have been known to do that.

Right now my favorite food obsession {besides the left over Halloween candy} is a spinach smoothie.

It doesn't look the prettiest, but it is tasty!

Let me share this easy-peasy {and healthy} recipe with you.....

1 banana
couple handfuls of fresh spinach
1/2 mango
2-3 spoonfuls of plain yogurt {I use whole milk/plain yogurt....no funny colors or flavors}
1/4 cup of milk {I use raw}
1 heaping TBSP of almond butter
just a drizzle of honey

I blend mine in the Vita-Mix until it is super smooth. You can add a few ice cubes if you like it a little colder......

Enjoy!

Your tummy will thank you!

Good morning and happy Monday girls!

Can you believe we are now well on our way into November? Where has the year gone? 2011 has been such a blessed year for the Haneys....we count our blessings every day! The sweetest blessing this year has been the blessing of this sweet little life....

As we look back on 2011 so fondly, we also look towards 2012 with excitement and anticipation. We have been steadily growing our little remodeling + design business and we are oh so excited for what 2012 will bring.

We will be adding several new lines of fabric, furnishings and wallpaper in 2012. Below is just a sneak peak of a few of the lovely items we will be adding.....

This morning I was dressing the sweet babe. One of her favorite sweaters is a cozy orange and pink, long sleeved number. {She told me that at the top of her lungs as I gently pulled it over her head}

Did you know that orange is the most flamboyant color on the planet! It's the color tied most this fun times, happy and energetic days, warmth and organic products. It is also associated with ambition. There is nothing even remotely calm associated with this color. Orange is associated with a new dawn in attitude.

Good morning girlie's!

What a BEAUTIFUL autumn morning here in Carlton!

The sun is poking through the fog, I can smell wood burning in the neighbor's fireplace, there are intricate spider webs EVERYWHERE and the leaves outside are so bold and colorful. Have I told you this is my FAVORITE time of year?

So, on to house talk.....one of the first rooms I am going to be "re-decorating" when we move, is the old office. Since we will be having a separate office/design space, our home office doesn't need to be huge. And, it will really be just my office as Matt plans to spend more time at the "new office."

Lighting is a big deal in an office. Who wants to squint when you are trying to crunch numbers? How about trying to thread a needle in a shadow? Not fun! Here are some of my thoughts so far......

Floor lamps are such a great option for just about any space. They don't take up valuable desk space, yet they can provide great task lighting.
What about this little guy....isn't he adorable?

Pendants can be a lot of fun in an office too. Of course it depends on the space, style and lighting need. Such a fun un-expected way to light up the office!

Ahhh, the classic drum shade. Goes so well in really any space......

Love the "old house feel" that this light brings to the picture.

baked pumpkin oatmeal

Good morning girlies!

I want to share a super easy, healthy and delicious baked oatmeal recipe.

I usually make baked oatmeal at least once a week. I love to stuff it full of sliced fresh fruit, dried fruit and nuts. Oh so scrumptious! Oh and let's not forget how yummy your house smells while it is baking away......

In honor of the cool, crisp mornings that have been knocking at my door, I decided to add a little festive, autumn flair.

BAKED PUMPKIN OATMEAL

The night before, soak 2 cups or oats in 1 cup of buttermilk or 1 cup water + 1 TBSP raw apple cider vinegar.

The next morning, add to your soaked oats:

1 cup pureed pumpkin (I roast my pumpkins and then freeze the puree in 1 cup cubes, I am sure canned pumpkin would work just as well!)

3/4 cup milk

1 egg

2 tsp. vanilla extract

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. nutmeg

1 tsp. sea salt

Give it a good stir.

Gently fold in raisins, diced apples or diced pears....or all three!

Top generously with walnuts and almonds.

Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes.

Sit with your favorite warm beverage (mine is a strong cup of coffee!) and enjoy!

apple + smoked mozarella mini-calzones

Good morning girls!

I am excited to get to spend some time with some girlfriends I have known since kindergarten. Kindergarten!

One friend is in town visiting family and has an evening engagement. so it will just be a casual and quick "catch-up." I am planning on making these tasty looking little nibbles. I will let you know how they turn out!

APPLE + SMOKED MOZARELLA MINI CALZONES // Makes 12
I have included a link to the whole wheat dough I like, but you can buy one from a local pizza place or at some grocery stores to save yourself time.

1 Whole Wheat Pizza Crust (see recipe here)
1 Yellow Onion, sliced thin
1/2 tbsp. Butter
1 Medium Apple (Honeycrisp, Fuji or anything crispy)
1 Cup Diced Smoked Mozarella Cheese
1 Cup Shredded Parmesan Cheese
Handful of Fresh Thyme
Handful of Fresh Chives

Extra Virgin Olive Oil for brushing
Dijon Mustard to Serve

Heat oven to 500′

1. Make the pizza dough according to recipe link, or if using a premade crust, let it come to room temperature.
2. In the meantime, warm the butter over medium heat in a saucepan and add the thinly sliced onion. Continue to move them every so often until they begin to caramelize, this whole process takes about 20 minutes give or take.
3. Seed and cut the apple into a rough dice. Pull of the thyme leaves, and give the thyme and chives and nice chop. Get all your fillings in order for easy stuffing.
4. Roll out the dough into a shape resembling a rectangle. You want the dough thin, but not too gentle that it will rip when you stuff and fold. Use a sharp knife to cut across, making about 3×3 inch squares. Lay them on a floured baking sheet in lines, see picture.
5. Pile your toppings in the middle of the square. I did the order of onions, apples, both cheeses, herbs and a twist of black pepper… but I don’t believe it makes any difference. Gently fold one corner across to the corner opposite, and gently press and fold the open edges. Repeat with all 12 or however many you end up with.
6. Brush the top of each mini calzone with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Bake in the upper third of the oven for about 14 minutes until tops are crispy brown. Let them rest just a minute before eating, serve with a little dipping dish of dijon mustard.

The key to a successfully decorated space is combining textures, colors and mixing vintage with new.

In Lee's bedroom, the bed will be an antique reproduction while the bed side table will be new and freshly painted with bright white paint. While King sized beds are not necessary in a guest bedroom, they are definitely appreciated!

We are also having a wing back chair {that has been sitting in her garage for 5 years} upholstered in a durable linen.

We ventured out to a pumpkin patch over the weekend. What a mad house! I did snatch some photos of my sweet little pumkin taking in all of the sights and sounds, I will post those photos soon.

Lighting

Lighting is oh so important!

It is an element that is easily over looked when re-decorating or remodeling. For the lighting in a space to be successful, you need 3 types of lighting....

Ambient: provides the area with overall illumination.

Task: for specific tasks {reading, sewing, piano playing, etc.}

Accent: adds drama by creating visual interest.

For Lee's guest bedroom we will be using a period appropriate school house style light fixture from SCHOOLHOUSE ELECTRIC. {Ambient}

We will add bright red lamps from POTTERY BARN for either side of the bed. {Task}

A darling pendant light with a burlap shade, also from POTTERY BARN, will be hung in the corner where we are creating a reading area. {TASK}

Battery operated candles will be used for decorating as well as accent lighting. {Accent}

fabric + linens

Fabrics and linens are some of my favorite items to work with. The options are endless.....especially when you know a good seamstress!

For Lee's guest bedroom, we are selecting WAVERLY fabrics. One advantage to using WAVERLY, is the fact that Lee can go to her local Jo-Anne's Fabric store and select/order these fabrics.

Lee has worked with a great seamstress in her area (Northern CA) so we have the option to have the drapes and bed linens custom made.

The polka-dot sheets are from Pottery Barn. They are a cotton blend with a 200-thread count. They will be comfortable and cozy for her guests.....a must when you want your house guests to enjoy a good night's sleep!

Tomorrow we will look at lighting.

decorating inspiration

I am doing my first "virtual" e-design job.

It sounds so technologically advanced. I NEVER use those two words to describe myself!

Anyways, Lee stayed at our Parkside Cottage and asked if I would guide her in re-decorating her guest bedroom.

I emailed her the 'beginnings + thoughts' for the sample board I will design for her guest room.

She has a couple "must include" items...

the room must be inviting
the room must incorporate primary colors {the rest of her home is decorated in reds and blues}
the room must get new hardwood floor to replace the old carpet
the room must flow with the rest of her 1942 Bungalow.

Tomorrow I will show you the products and accessories I am going to source for her....

So blessed to love what I do!

from trash to treasure

I had these old, gross, beat up, fake pumpkins lying around. They were too yucky to take to Goodwill. I was about to toss them....it's trash day.....I had extra space in the trash can.

Instead of sending those sad, yucky pumpkins to the landfill, I decided to give them a new life.

I washed them with warm, soapy water, let them air dry, then lightly sanded them.

I rummaged through Matt's shop and found a few cans of white and silver spray paint.

Viola!

home.grown.blueberries.

Blueberries are one of my favorite berries!

Sweet, plump and tender.

I am particularly fond of them in peach-blueberry pie.

Even better.....warm, right-out-of-the-oven peach-blueberry pie.ummmmm.

This FALL, I have decided to try my hand {once again} at growing blueberries. I planted 4 bushes when we first moved to Carlton. I didn't prep the soil like I should have and the location wasn't ideal. They clung to life for about 2 years. There came a point where I couldn't save them, it was best {for both parties} to put them out of their misery. Poor things.

Anyways, Red Ridge Farms was having a 50% discount on all of their plants this weekend! I loaded up the baby {she loves to shop} and the hubby {he is very strong and comes in quite handy while on the hunt for the perfect shrubs and trees!} in the truck and we ventured up into the BEAUTIFUL Dundee Hills. If you haven't yet been to Red Ridge Farms, it is definitely worth a trip!

Anyways, I picked up two blushing beauties. In case you decide to plant some blueberries this FALL, here are a few tips I am happy to pass on....

Blueberries like a sunny location. A spot that is free of weeds and cushioned with well drained, slightly acidic soil. The root system is fairly shallow, so you want to keep the roots watered well during the summer months. Blueberries like 2-4" of mulch over the roots, this will help with moisture retention.

They can be planted as close as 2 1/2 feet apart. It is important that blueberries get established before allowing them to bear fruit. They should be heavily pruned each year to avoid over fruiting which results in small or poor growth.

Six years ago we decided to buy a home in Carlton.

We didn't know that such a simple step could be such a positive influence in our lives. We love this darling little town. We love to watch the downtown grow and prosper. We love meeting new neighbors who decide to dig there roots {deep!} into this sweet community. Most of all, we love the friendships that have been cultivated in our quaint little city.

This was the little gem that stole our hearts.

It needed A LOT of work.

It got our creative juices flowing.

It ate all of our money.

It made for wonderful memories.

We began demo after owning it just 2 months.

The original house was approximately 900 s.f., we added 11oo s.f. plus a 2 car garage.....

A year in a half later, we were finished.

A labor of love....

We moved out after living in the finished house for just 1 year {yes, we are crazy!} We turned it into a vacation rental so we could set our sights {and hard earned $$} on fixing up another "fixer" in Carlton.

Well, the "fixer" is finished and we are ready to move "back home."

This winter we will be moving back.

Oh I CAN NOT wait to re-decorate ;-)

I am about to re-decorate the dining room and I can't wait to share photos with you.

fresh peach + tomato salad

One of my favorite summer past times is gardening.

I love getting dirt under my fingernails.

I love nurturing tender seedlings.

I love the fresh air and sunshine against my back.

I love planning my next season's crop.

I REALLY love reaping the sweet rewards and devouring fresh fruit and veggies like they are going out of style.

Here is a simple, garden fresh salad that I make 3-4 times a week during the last warm, sunny weeks of summer.

2 peaches, washed and sliced.

4-5 tomatoes, roughly chopped. {any variety tastes great, although ROMA would be my very last choice.}

1/4 sweet onion, thinly sliced

splash of balsamic vinegar

few TBSP of high quality olive oil

sea salt

freshly ground pepper

1 tsp sugar {I use rapadua}

Mix.

Serve at room temperature.

Fish Tacos {salmon}

Our favorite summer dinners are simple, fresh and tasty.

Tonight's dinner.....fish {salmon} tacos.

Simple. Fresh. Tasty.

Rub salmon with olive oil and lightly dust with sea salt, pepper, cumin and fresh cilantro.

Cook 3-4 minutes {over medium/low heat} on each side.

Meanwhile, heat your corn tortillas in the oven for 6-8 minutes. {Sweet hubby likes his corn tortillas fried in oil. That's a labor of love and I just wasn't willing to go that far for the dear man this evening.}

Mix:

black beans {about 1 cup}

cherry tomatoes, cut in half

1 shredded carrot

1 diced bell pepper

1 diced jalapeno pepper

2 TBSP fresh cilantro

squeeze of fresh lemon juice

1 tsp of cumin

olive oil

sea salt {to taste}

let this marinate at room temperature while you finish cooking the tortillas and salmon.

Assemble the tacos.

Garnish with avocado, fresh cilantro and sour cream or whatever suites your fancy!

Enjoy!

Did you know that I.LOVE.TO.BAKE?

Oh I do!

Especially for others!

Today, I decided to make OREOS.

Except these little treats are fresh. No funny ingredients. No funny preservatives. And let me tell you, you can taste the difference!

Let’s talk about the sugar for a minute. This is a darling little sweet cookie.

Yet, if you think of an actual Oreos, the wafers are fairly un-sweet and actually on the slightly salty side. This contrasts with the super-sweetness of the filling bringing harmony and happiness. If you want your cookie closer to that original, you can take out a full half-cup of the sugar. If you want to make the cookie by itself, go ahead and use the full amount.

Makes 25 to 30 sandwich cookies

For the chocolate wafers:
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened Dutch process cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 to 1 1/2 cups sugar [see recipe note]
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) room-temperature, unsalted butter
1 large egg

For the filling:
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) + 4 TBSP room-temperature, unsalted butter
2 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar ( I made my own powdered sugar in my Vita-Mix, but I am sure packaged powdered sugar would be just fine.)
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Set two racks in the middle of the oven. Preheat to 375°F.
In a food processor, or bowl of an electric mixer, thoroughly mix the flour, cocoa, baking soda and powder, salt, and sugar. While pulsing, or on low speed, add the butter, and then the egg. Continue processing or mixing until dough comes together in a mass.
Take rounded teaspoons of batter and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet approximately two inches apart. With moistened hands, slightly flatten the dough. Bake for 9 minutes, rotating once for even baking. Set baking sheets on a rack to cool.
To make the cream, place butter in a mixing bowl, and at low speed, gradually beat in the sugar and vanilla. Turn the mixer on high and beat for 2 to 3 minutes until filling is light and fluffy.
To assemble the cookies, in a pastry bag with a 1/2 inch, round tip, pipe teaspoon-size blobs of cream into the center of one cookie. Place another cookie, equal in size to the first, on top of the cream. Lightly press, to work the filling evenly to the outsides of the cookie. Continue this process until all the cookies have been sandwiched with cream.

Dunk generously in a large glass of milk and ENJOY!

Hello girls!

Besides tending to the sweet babe and trying to keep up with the garden, I have been fortunate enough to carve out time for some great design projects. I am working with one client who wants to have the entire interior of her home re-painted. I LOVE what paint can do to a space!

Color can be a touchy subject. Sometimes we use color that evokes certain emotions, other times we use colors simply because we like the way it looks! While any design instructor will tell you that the latter reason is completely wrong, I would disagree. Color always has a purpose behind it. There is nothing wrong with choosing a color because you like it because, after all, it is your work. However, when choosing a color you still want it to flow with the rest of the space. Proper use of basic color theory can help you decide what colors match, as well as what each color makes people feel.

The color wheel is an amazing tool! You have your 6 basic colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Then, depending on which wheel you're looking at, you have extra, "in-between" colors that are mixes of the basic colors.

There are names for all of these colors. Primary Colors: Red, Yellow, Blue. These 3 colors are the base colors for every other color on the color wheel. This is why they're called "primary." When you mix two primaries together, you get a secondary color. These are some of my favorite inspiration rooms using primary colors.....

The complementary color of a primary color (red, blue, or yellow) is the color you get by mixing the other two primary colors. So the complementary color of red is green, of blue is orange, and of yellow is purple.

Complementary color schemes are always a favorite of mine! I especially love blue and orange for little boys!

fresh green bean salad

We have an abundance of green beans in the garden.....

It's a problem I thoroughly enjoy!

I have been freezing and lacto-fermenting green beans every morning.

I thought I would share a simple recipe for a fresh green bean salad.

It is so tasty and super easy!

1 lb. of fresh green beans

fresh lemon juice

olive oil

sea salt

black pepper

Pinch the ends off your green beans.

Blanch {cook in boiling water for 2-3 minutes then immediately place the green beans in a bowl filled with ice water.}

Toss green beans with {approximately} the juice of one lemon, 2 TBSP of olive oil, a few dashes of sea salt and a dash of fresh black pepper.

Toss.

Serve at room temp. or cold.

Enjoy!

Happy Friday girls!

Well, the Haney 3 made it back from our lovely Southern CA road trip. I love exploring new places, relaxing by the pool and hanging out with family, but this Oregon girl also LOVES her home. So happy to be back.

I thought I would share with you one of my new obsessions.....

THIBAUT WALLPAPER.

I am working with some clients and we will be hanging new wallpaper to cover the old, outdated, wallpaper that currently graces their walls.

You see, the EPA has decided to get more involved in the construction and design world. They have new rules and regulations regarding lead based paint. The new rules can add hundreds to thousands of dollars worth of extra expenses to a job.

With this pre-1900 building, we know that the paint is most likely lead based. We also know the wallpaper is in great shape. To save thousands of dollars in removing the old wallpaper, we will just hang new over the existing. Did you know you can actually hang up to three layers of wallpaper if the existing wallpaper is in good shape. YEP. The wallpaper will need to be primed and the seams may need a bit of prepping.......but it can be done and look great!

Florals can add color, life and character to a room. They can also outdated. I know we have all seen the "classic 80's" floral wallpaper alive and well in some homes. ;-)

Stoller Wedding

Good morning girls!

The Haneys were invited to a beautiful wedding yesterday at Stoller Winery. What a BEAUTIFUL setting......grassy hills, vineyards, oak trees and blooming daylillys.

The decor was playful yet so tasteful.

You want to know the really fun thing about our wedding adventure yesterday? We didn't know one. single. person.....but the groom.

You see....the groom is our neighbor.

Super nice guy. He is a very creative worker bee......he has started two restaurants {Farm to Fork in Dundee and Recipe in Newberg} since his short time here in Carlton.

I think it's a safe bet to say he is a 'foodie.'

The colors were aqua blue and a light sage green. How cute is their logo???

Back to the 'foodie' comment....the food at the wedding was lovely.

Everything was so fresh.....just like at his wonderful restaurant!

salmon, flank steak, beautiful salads, bountiful fruit and a beautiful cupcake display. Oh and let's not forget the yummy wines from STOLLER......

My favorite part of the beautiful evening was spending time with these two.....

Oak trees, grapes, grassy hills, beautiful barns and historic houses.....a beautiful setting for a July wedding in the Willamette Valley.

Love was in the air.....

Matt just finished building and installing beautiful cabinetry for a super nice couple up in Tualatin. I actually think these are the first clients he has done work for that I have never met!

One of the perks of being self-employed in this line of work, is that you get to meet wonderful people.

People from all walks of life......

When Matt takes on large remodels, he usually becomes like family to the clients! He is in their house nearly EVERY day, ALL DAY.

I love it! He comes home and tells me all about his day. I hear all about what is going on with the remodel, and usually what the latest happenings are with the clients.

All that to say......I am sad I haven't had a chance to meet these clients....from the "tales of the day," I know they are super sweet people........

Here is a looksie at their new living room cabinetry....

Everything fit into place perfectly....

The mantel is CHERRY.....I love how it pops against the painted cabinetry.

Every inch is custom built....

The rustic marble surround is a beautiful contrast next to the smooth, refined CHERRY wood.

This 4th of July we decided to venture over to Cannon Beach for the day.

If you haven't been there, you must go!

It is the sweetest little town.....boutiques, bakeries, coffee shops, beautiful homes and inns....and they really know how to celebrate the 4th in style!

A friend advised us to get there early in the morning and we are so glad we listened.

A fresh pastry and strong coffee is the perfect start to a day at the beach. Addilyn was sad she couldn't have a pecan roll, she snacked on my fingers instead.

Are you ready for a bit more eye candy?

You are going to LOVE this bathroom!

It is a fabulous mix of textures, colors and styles......

The crown molding really pops against the grass cloth wall covering.

Matt built the vanity and cabinetry out of knotty alder. He distressed both pieces, just ever so slightly, and stained them to match the homeowners color preference.

He pays such attention to detail....

The wall mount scones are mounted to the mirror. It opens up the room, and creates a perfectly lit space.

Look at that marble floor.......isn't it a lovely contrast to the distressed cabinetry??

The homeowner knew exactly what she wanted the vanity to look like. She showed Matt a magazine photo and we just went from there.....

It is absolutely DELIGHTFUL to work for clients who have such impeccable taste.

What a treat to work in their home!

Master Bathroom Remodel

I know we all love a little eye candy.

For me, eye candy usually has to do with HOME and GARDEN. And now, I can add to that all things BABY.

It's been a couple of months since Matt finished remodeling two bathrooms for a lovely couple in McMinnville. Let me tell you, these bathrooms are some super sweet eye candy!

Split-face marble adorned two of the master bathroom walls.

The pendant lights add an elegant touch.

The color scheme was very neutral. The black hardware gave a timeless pop of color.

Walls were removed to open up the space and make room for a second vanity.

I LOVE the texture the marble adds to the space.

Pendants, wall mount and can lights provide more than adequate lighting. Good lighting is so important in bathrooms!

The pictures really don't do the space justice! I will have pictures of the guest bath later in the week.

This morning, I was working in the front gardens feeling a bit overwhelmed by the (beautiful) vegetation we have at Main Street.

Then I remembered how far we have come with fixing up this adorable little cottage!

Good morning friends!

The sweet summer sun is finally shining and I can smell the heavenly scent of blooming honeysuckle wafting through my windows. Nothing beats a sunny day in June!

Some fun news for the Haneys this week.....we received a call from the editor at This Old House magazine.

Did I mention that we LOVe that magazine?

When a new issue arrives in the mail, I make my favorite iced drink (latte with raw milk of course!) wait for the sweet babe to go down for a nap and indulge myself. The pictures are always amazing and it inspires me to see others and their love for old homes.

Anyways.......

We received the phone call from the editor. They are going to be featuring our upstairs attic renovation in a 2011 article titled "Before & After."

Yep!

A two page spread showing our nasty attic space "before" and our lovely master suite "after."

But that's not it......

they are also going to do an article in 2012 with photos of the front of our humble little cottage for a spread titled "Curb Appeal."

My sweet hubby is so talented and I love any chance I can get to brag about him a bit. Will definitely keep you posted on the progress!

I have to share with you this recipe for the best RHUBARB CAKE EVER!

Seriously.....this cake is so good!!

2 & 1/3 cups Self-Raising Flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp cinnamon
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

1 & 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar

1 large egg
3 tsp pure vanilla extract

(1 cup) sour cream
(4 cups) rhubarb, cut into 1cm chunks
1/4 tsp grated nutmeg
(1/2 cup) sugar
(1/3 cup) flaked almonds (not necessary, but it adds a nice aesthetic to the cake)

Pure cream or vanilla ice cream, to serve

1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9" round cake tin (I just used non-stick baking paper as this ensures easy clean up). Then mix together the flour, salt and 1 and 1/2 tsp of cinnamon in a bowl with a whisk and set aside. Put the butter and brown sugar into a separate bowl and beat till the mixture resembles (and feels like) wet sand.

Once the butter is fully incorporated, add the egg and beat will till the mixture is fluffy and creamy and there are no more lumps of sugar.

4. Add the sour cream and vanilla and beat in till well combined.5. Mix in the flour on low speed till combined, then add your rhubarb chunks and stir briskly to make sure that the rhubarb is completely coated in batter. PLEASE use a large bowl like I did in the pictures, as if you don’t (like my first attempt at this cake), you will end up with a overflowing bowl of messy deliciousness that will go EVERYWHERE!!)

6. Once the mixture is combined, scrape it into your prepared cake tin and sprinkle the top liberally with flaked almonds and caster sugar. I didn’t have any almonds the second time I made this (as you can see in the picture), but I actually found that the top stayed nice and crunchy even longer without the almonds. Go figure!

7. Bake the cake for 1 hour and 10 minutes, or till a wooden skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Now at this stage you can serve it as a pudding by scooping it out of the container with a large spoon and serving with a dollop of vanilla bean ice cream…but if you wait till it cools down, it tastes even better as a luscious, tender cake with lashings of pure cream.

Good morning girls!

This morning Matt has been working on designing cabinets for an entertainment center/fireplace surround. Can I just boast for a minute about how proud I am of my hubby?!? He is so talented and I LOVE that he LOVES what he does for a living.

We both LOVE creating.

The big difference between the two of us is that Matt can build the 'creation.'

He builds with such detail. He is truly a perfectionist at heart!

For our kitchen, we wanted wood counter tops. He researched and then 'played' with different woods. It took him a lot of time and he was very thoughtful and thorough with every step. But look at how beautiful they turned out!

I could brag all day about what a fine craftsman he is.....but the real proof is in the puddin!

I will definitely post photos of the cabinetry he is working on.....they are going to be just beautiful!

rhubarb rosemary jelly

Good Monday morning girls!

What is a girl to do when she has rhubarb coming out of her ears?

Well......give some to the neighbors and of course make anything and everything "rhubarb!"

This morning I made a batch of Rhubarb Rosemary Jam. I thought I would share the recipe with you.....

RHUBARB ROSEMARY JELLY

MAKES ABOUT 3 CUPS

This jelly is a delicious alternative to the traditional mint jelly served as an accompaniment to roasted meats such as lamb or turkey.

• 1 pound trimmed rhubarb

• 1 3/4 cups water

• 3 1/4 cups sugar

• 1/3 cup white-wine vinegar

• 3 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary leaves

• two 1/4-ounce envelopes unflavored gelatin

• SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: sterilized jars and lids

Cut enough rhubarb crosswise into 1/2-inch slices to measure 3 cups. In a 4-quart kettle bring rhubarb, 1 1/2 cups water, sugar, vinegar, and rosemary to a boil and simmer 15 minutes (rhubarb will disintegrate).

While rhubarb is simmering, in a small bowl sprinkle gelatin over remaining 1/4 cup water and let soften 1 minute. Remove kettle from heat and stir gelatin mixture into rhubarb mixture until gelatin is just dissolved.

Pour mixture through a fine sieve into a large bowl, gently pressing on solids, and discard solids. Skim off any foam and immediately pour jelly into sterilized jars, filling to within 1/8 inch of tops.

Wipe rims of jars with a dampened cloth and seal jars with lids. Cool jars completely. Rhubarb rosemary jelly keeps, chilled, 2 months.

We haven't tried it yet but I will let you know how it tastes!

Fresh Butter

Good morning girls!

Have you ever had fresh butter?

I made some this week and it is a treat for the taste buds! The extra bonus about fresh butter is that is have health benefits as well since it is made from raw milk.

We have been drinking raw milk at the Haney household for only a month or so. You can't find it at the grocery stores here in Oregon. We buy ours from a small farm outside of Yamhill. At $8.50 per half gallon it's pretty expensive compared to the milk at the grocery store, but to me it's worth it! Raw milk from healthy, pastured cows eating their natural diet of green grass has a lot of advantages. It contains lactic-acid-producing bacteria that protect against pathogens. It contains milk’s natural and full array of vitamins and minerals. It contains the enzymes your body uses to help digest it, easing your pancreatic load and preventing degenerative diseases. And, it comes rich with butter fat — good wholesome cream that I use to make fresh butter!

YUMMY!

Making fresh butter only takes about 5 minutes...really it is so easy!

1. Pour the fresh cream into the blender and blend on medium speed for about 5 minutes, or until you see the butter and buttermilk begin to separate.

2. Let the mixture rest in the blender for a few minutes. Once the buttermilk has risen to the top, use a wooden spoon to hold the butter down and pour out the buttermilk.

Extra bonus-now you have fresh buttermilk!

I just make small batches at a time which we eat up in a day or two. If you want your butter to last longer, you will need to finish one more step....

3. Pour a glass of ice water (without the ice) into the blender. Blend for 30 seconds. Holding the butter back with a wooden spoon, pour out the ice water.

Now it should last you a week or so!

Hello girls!

Can you believe we are finally getting a taste of summer here in the Pacific NW?

Love it!

Matt just finished a "bathroom makeover." The bathroom was in great shape....the house is fairly new, it was just kind of "plain jane."

The owner just wanted it to fit her style a bit more......so Matt dressed it up!

A new granite countertop was installed and a shiny new back splash gives the space a little extra character.

The entire bathroom, including the front of the soaking tub, received beautiful white wainscoting. Custom finish work adds so much character.

What you can't see is the BEAUTIFUL new tile floor and the 3" tall white crown molding.

Just a few changes.....but a major difference!

It just goes to show you don't have to have an extensive remodel done to make your space fit your style.

Hello girls!

Well, we are celebrating at the Haney household today. It's actually a bit bittersweet, but we just closed escrow on our Gardenside Cottage.

We sold the home to a LoVelY couple from Texas. They now will be spending their summers in Carlton and their winters in Texas.....sounds like a pretty good set up to me.

We have a few ideas up our sleeves here at MD Haney & Co. With the sale of one home, that gives us a bit more free time to scheme up other ideas!

Good morning girls!

Last year at this time, I was getting ready to head up to Spokane for the 2010 Farm Chicks Show.

Have you ever been? Oh it is a fabulous show full of extremely talented vendors. I haven't yet decided if I will be going up this year since now there is a sweet babe in tow! Here are a few photos I snapped from last year.....

Good afternoon girls!

I have not been tending to my blog lately. I have been a little busy loving on this sweet little lady.

However, I did get my cool crops in a few weeks ago and they are trying to peek above the wet mud! Since the weather has been so cold and wet, I have spent a lot of time in the kitchen. I thought I would share a recipe with you....a healthy, hearty, easy, crock-pot recipe......White Bean & Chicken Chili

2 cups of white beans
2 cups of cooked, diced chicken
4 cups of chicken broth
1 small onion, diced
1 TBSP of cumin
1/2 tsp of chili powder
sour cream
cilantro

Soak the beans the night before.
Add soaked beans, chicken broth and onion to crock-pot.
Cook on LOW for 3-4 hours.
Add chicken, cumin and chili powder.
Cook on Low for another hour.
Garnish with sour cream and fresh cilantro.

I have experimented with additional spices as well, this is really just a great "base" chili. It is also "light" enough to enjoy through our wet, gray Springs!

Hello girls!

OK local girls, I want you to mark your calendar for Labor Day weekend. Instead of my usual "SPRING FLING VINTAGE SALE" Memorial Day weekend.....we are having a "EARLY AUTUMN VINTAGE SALE."

With the arrival of the sweet little babe, I just don't think I can get everything together by the end of May. The great thing with a September sale is I have all summer to get ready!!!

Hello girls!

I had a friend ask "What is the best Spring crop to plant in a container?"

I know we don't all have the space, time or energy to plant full garden beds of crops. So, for those of us who still want a little bit of freshly-grown-garden-goodness, planting veggies and herbs in containers is a great way to go.

Salad greens are a great cool weather crop to plant in containers. If your container is right next to your door, it is super convenient to just pop outside and cut some greens for your salad.

Mesclun is a mixture of young salad greens that are sown and grown together and is considered a cool season crop. Cool season crops are crops you grow in spring through early summer, and plant again in early fall. The colors and textures are beautiful, and the taste of freshly cut and dressed salad greens is hard to beat!

Another great cool season "crop" that can do well in containers are sugar snap peas. I make trellis out of twigs to support the growing vines. You can't plant more than 3-4 plants, depending on the size of your container. A great way to really utilize the container is to plant your sugar snap peas first. Once the peas are 5-6 inches tall, construct your trellis and place in the container. You will need to patiently train your little pea shoots how to climb the trellis. Once your trellis is in your container, you can then sow your salad greens (or plant transplants) in the rest of the pot. The grown peas will provide some cool shade for your salad greens and it will be a great use of the entire container.

Good morning girls!

Over the weekend I was able to get my "spring crop" planted. It felt so good to be outside working in the dirt!

I love the taste of home grown carrots. I honestly don't plant a lot of carrots because I don't have the space and I can buy organic carrots so inexpensively from Costco. But, I do plant some because they really are so sweet.

I LOVE beets! I plant quite a few beets. They are so easy to grow and there are so many great recipes that call for beets!

Salad greens are so easy to grow! Organic salad greens are so expensive at the store compared to the cost of growing your own. I usually use "succession" planting and plant a new crop of greens every two weeks in the Spring and Fall.

I also just got my sugar snap peas in the ground for the second time. I planted my first crop about 4 weeks ago and then we got the heavy rain and snow! I love sugar snap peas and I have found that they actually freeze pretty well for later use in stir-frys!

Well, I better get back to loving on this sweet little babe of mine!

spring planting ideas

Good morning girls!

Well, if you are a "Pacific Northwest-er" than I am sure you are ready for some sunshine! It has been pretty gray and wet around here. The benefit to the awful weather is that it gives a girl plenty of time to plan for her gardens and container plantings! I thought I would look back through a few of my photos for some planting inspiration.....

Succulents are so easy to grow! They are water retaining plants that store water in the leaves, stems and roots. They are perfect for arid climates, but also for indoor or outdoor arrangements that you don't want to worry about watering everyday.

I love making planters out of the unexpected. This "pot" is an old galvanized bucket. To use the "unexpected" as a pot, just be sure to add holes to the bottom of the container (I usually just use a hammer and large nail) and then add some small rocks to the bottom to ensure good drainage.

Bulbs are one of my favorite things about Spring! They add so much life to a dreary Spring landscape.

I love having wreathes hanging on the front door. It just says 'WELCOME' and they are so fun to change out with the season or holiday.

I know feel a bit more inspired to head to the garden center and purchase a few Spring bloomers! I hope you do too!!

Since I am not doing much more than just luvin on my SWEET PEA, I thought I would share a few more photos ;-)

Just a few hours old....

As most of you know, I had a home birth.

The experience was AMAZING, and I hope to have any other sweet babies that we will be blessed with, at home as well.

Within just 2 hours of having her, we were snuggled on the couch eating lunch and taking photos of her!

hi girls!

i just wanted to take a quick second and introduce you to miss addilyn mae haney.

she was born february 23rd {my 30th birthday} weighing 6 lbs. and 8 ounces and stretching 19.5 inches long.

she is healthy, beautiful and stealing our hearts....
